Keeping Things in Perspective

23:
Congratulations to Drew Murphy, who has been named the new
Head Basketball Coach at Centreville High School. As you
know, Drew was my assistant coach this year, and he is
highly qualified. He served as the Head Coach at McLean
High School for five years before joining the staff at
Centreville. He also serves as the Special Education
Department Chairperson at Centreville. Please join me in
congratulating Coach Murphy!
June
5:
As most of you probably know by now, I have stepped down
as the Head Basketball Coach at Centreville High School.
After recently being named an Assistant Principal, I
planned on continuing to coach. Having been in my new
position for a month now, it has become apparent to me
that there is not enough time in the day for me to be the
best father, husband, Head Basketball Coach, and Assistant
Principal that I can be. The last thing that I want to do
is cheat the kids, my family, Centreville High School and
Mr. Campbell by stretching myself too thin. I love
coaching, and I hope to stay involved with the Centreville
basketball program in some capacity--I simply cannot lead
the program at this juncture.
I believe the program is headed in the right direction,
and I look forward to future success for Centreville
Basketball. I thank all of my current and former players,
coaches, parents, administrators, and most of all my
family, for their support in this tough decision and for
their support over the years.
I'll be in touch.
Go wildcats!

December 19:
We lost a tough one at South County last night. What we
have learned is that we can compete. We have had three
close games in a row. We have also learned that we don't
have a large margin of error. We need to buckle down and
play possession by possession basketball. Back to work
today.
December 12:
The Wildcats lost a tough battle last night at Wakefield
52-47…Despite turning the ball over too many times, and
shooting only 6 free throws as opposed to Wakefield's 24,
we had an opportunity to win the game. Hopefully this was
a growth experience for us as we head into our home game

October 4:

I am pleased to announce the hiring of Ken Savittiere as
our new Freshmen Boys Basketball Coach. Coach Savittiere
brings a wealth of coaching experience as well as
expertise in strength and conditioning. Welcome Coach
Savittiere!
In addition, the schedules for the 2007-08 season
have been announced. Be sure to visit the
Varsity,
Junior
Varsity and
Freshmen team pages for the the updated schedules.
October 1:
As we prepare for our upcoming season, I had an
opportunity to check in with Virginia Wesleyan assistant
coach Brad Dunleavy recently. Coach Dunleavy informed me
that both Tim Weyant, '06, and Quantrell Simmons, '07, are
workng hard in their conditioning and open gym sessions.
Let's hope that both Tim and "Q" can work their way into
the rotation for the Marlins. Virginia Wesleyan won the
Division III National Championship in 2005-06 and were
National Runners-Up in 2006-07.
August 27:
I am thrilled to confirm that McLean Head Coach Drew
Murphy has joined our staff at Centreville as Associate
Head Coach. I have know Drew for a long time, as we
coached at rival schools when I was at Langley. He has
done a great job with their program, and he has a lot to
offer to the Wildcats! Coach Murphy is a Centreville
resident and is excited about the opportunity to coach in
the community in which he lives. Coach Murphy will also
serve as the co-chairperson of the Special Education
Department at Centreville. Please join me in welcoming
Coach Murphy to Centreville.
August 17:
I hope everyone is enjoying the end of summer…I am back at
work and anxious to get started preparing for the 07-08
basketball season! We'll start conditioning and open gym
shortly after the start of school.
I received a phone call from one of my former Langley
players today, Michael Housman, who played d-I ball at the
University of Maryland-Baltimore County. He was calling to
tell me that he has just signed a contract to play
professionally in Finland…I had another player from my
days at Paul VI years ago who also had a nice career
overseas. Along those lines, I recently read a book by
Paul Shirley, entitled Can I Keep My Jersey, 11 Teams, 5
Countries, and 4 Years in My Life as a Basketball
Vagabond. It was an interesting look at a player's odyssey
through professional basketball here and overseas.
July 30:
Congratulations to CVHS Assistant Coach Bobby Forst, who
has just been named the Head Coach at Marshall High
School. We thank Coach Forst for his efforts at C'ville
and wish him the best of luck in his new position at
Marshall.
Also, congrats are in order for Babu Ghuman, '07, who has
committed to play basketball at Montgomery
College-Germantown. "Babs" will join Mitchell Dudley, '07,
at Montgomery Germantown, where they will compete against
Malachi Jackson, '06, who is at Montgomery Takoma
Park-Silver Spring. Five former Wildcats from '06 and '07
are now playing college ball. Quantrell Simmons, '07, and
Tim Weyant, '06 are both at Virginia Wesleyan.
With our summer leagues now complete, we take a little
down time and then begin preparing for the '07-0'08
season. Go Wildcats!
On a more personal note, we keep the family of SKIP
PROSSER in our thoughts and prayers. I had the opportunity
years ago to work camp at Xavier University in Cincinnati,
when Coach Prosser was an assistant, and also heard him
speak at a couple of clinics over the years. He was an
outstanding coach and unquestionably one of the "good
guys" in college coaching.
July 13:
Congratulations to our JV Summer league team which lost a
tough overtime playoff game last night to Chantilly. The
squad finished off a successful summer league season with
a taste of back to back intense games vs. Chantilly,
beating them on Tuesday before last night tough loss. Go
Wildcats!
June 25:
SHERMAR WOODS COMMITS TO HAMPTON

Shemar!

Wildcat to make a college commitment. Quantrell Simmons

as the National Runner-Up after winning the National
Championship in 2005-06. Simmons will join former wildcat
point guard Tim Weyant at Virginia Wesleyan.
March 19: Congratulations to our two alumni from
'06 who just completed their first seasons at the
collegiate level. Tim Weyant's Virginia Wesleyan Marlins
played in their second consecutive national championship
game. After winning the championship last year, the
Marlins finished second this year to Amherst College. For

will again conduct two weeks of basketball camp this
summer for boys ages 8-14. The weeks are July 9-13 and
July 16-20, and brochures are posted on this site. We look
forward to seeing you at camp!

Feb. 23: Congrats to the four regional
semifinalists: Chantilly, West Springfield, TC Williams,
and Wakefield. Having played Chantilly and Wakefield this
year and competing well against them at the end of the
season, it is not too difficult to foresee the Wildcats
making a run in the future. Dream big Wildcats! For some
random thoughts on the regional tournament, check out this
piece I wrote for the Northern Virginia Sun Gazette:

Go Wildcats!
Feb. 14: The Centreville Wildcats season came to a
disappointing end on Monday night at Chantilly. While the
season did not end as we would have liked, it should be
noted that the 2006-07 campaign had a lot of super
moments. I would like to thanks all of our seniors for
their contributions to the basketball program and I wish
them all the best in thee future. I would also like to
thank the students and the parents who gave their support
to the team.

victory vs. Oakton on Friday night.

storming back, led by Ben Kiernan's career high 16 points,

Feb. 8: Despite our heartbreaking 53-52 loss
Tuesday night to Chantilly, we are not quitting and we are
looking forward to Friday night's game at Oakton. It also
looks like we will open Concorde District tournament play
at Chantilly on Tuesday night. Though we have not won for
awhile, we feel like we are "knocking on the door."
Fortunately, basketball is a tournament sport, and we are
excited about the opportunity to make some noise in the
tournament. Go Wildcats!
Feb. 6: After a hard fought loss to Wakefield last
Friday, we turn our attention to our last week of district
play. Though our record is not what we would like, we also
realize that in basketball, it all comes down to how you
are playing at the end of the year. We host Chantilly in
our senior night on Tuesday and travel to Oakton on
Friday, before beginning the Concorde District Tournament
next Tuesday night on the road. Congratulations to our
eight seniors: Mitchell Dudley, Quantrell Simmons, Van
Chew, Brandon Snead, Babu Ghuman, Ben Kiernan, Darien
Hurdle, and Shemar Woods.
Feb. 2: We are trying to dig ourselves out of a rut
right now. The great thing about basketball is that what
matters most is how you are playing at the end of the
year. There is no better time than now for us to play our
best basketball. Please keep supporting the Wildcats!
There was also a nice article about Quantrell Simmons in
the Centreville Times.

to tour the new John Paul Jones Arena at the University of
Virginia. Following the tour of this beautiful facility,
we met Coach Dave Leitao and former Northern Region Coach
and GMU Assistant Bill Courtney and watched the Cavaliers
practice. Both Mr. Sanabria and I were impressed with the
work ethic and the discipline in practice, not to mention
the outstanding back court of JR Reynolds and Sean
Singletary. Watching them practice just gets me more
excited for the start of our season!
October 4:
With 40 days until tryouts, our guys are working hard
preparing for a successful season. We are playing two days
a week and doing conditioning two days a week.
Additionally, we are supporting our highly ranked football
team, as some of our basketball guys are also on the
gridiron. We are excited about preparing and looking
forward to November 13. Go Wildcats.
July 26: I hope everyone has had a good summer. We
have completed two weeks of camp for future Wildcats, and
our players have played in JV and Varsity summer leagues
as well as AAU. As summer winds down, we will all catch
our breath before we start to prepare for a successful
2006-07 Centreville Wildcat Basketball season. Go
Wildcats!
June 9: Congratulations to senior David Ferrer who
yesterday was honored at an awards ceremony as the this
years boys basketball Scholar Athlete. Congratulations to
all of our seniors who are graduating next week.
May 1: Congratulations to Tim Weyant and Malachi
Jackson on their college choices. Tim has committed to
Division 3 National Champion Virginia Wesleyan College,
and Malachi to Montgomery College-Takoma Park/Silver
Spring. Congratulations to both Tim and Malachi as they
continue their basketball careers!
April 21: We have two exciting community events
coming up. First is our First Annual Wildcat Basketball
Jamboree 3 on 3 Hoops Tournament scheduled for Saturday,
June 17. This event is open to boys and girls in grades
3-12. We hope to have a great turnout!
Secondly, we are offering two weeks of basketball camp for
boys ages 8-14 this summer. Session I is July 10-14, and
Session II is July 17-21.
Applications for both of these events are available on
this site. Feel free to e-mail me at brian.doyle@fcps.edu
with any questions.
Go Wildcats!
March 13: Another high school basketball season is
complete, with Booker T. Washington of Norfolk winning the
Virginia AAA State title. With everyone talking about the
25 years since the Northern Region has won a state
championship, let's take a minute to congratulate the
Marshall Statesmen for their outstanding run, eventually
losing on a buzzer beater to eventual champion BTW in the
state semifinals. Also, congrats to Herndon's Scotty
Reynolds on one of the best careers ever for a Virginia
High School League basketball player.
February 23: For those of you who are interested in
trying out for Nova United AAU, there first tryouts will
be held on Friday March 3 at South County High School:
15 & Under - 6:30 p.m.
16 & Under - 7:00 p.m.
17 & Under - 7:30 p.m.
February 16: I was very proud of our effort against
Fairfax on Tuesday night. We competed hard and executed
well and had them on the ropes. Though we did not win as
much as any of us would like this year, I believe we have
begun to lay the foundation for building a winning
program.
A special congratulations goes out to our seniors, David
Ferrer, Jeff Hampel, Malachi Jackson, Chris Neale, David
Park, and Tim Weyant. We wish you all luck.
Congratulations also to Quantrell Simmons for being
selected 2nd Team All District, to Tim Weyant and David
Park for being named Honorable Mention All District and to
Malachi Jackson for being selected to the Concorde
District All Defensive Team.
February 8: We had a great road victory last night,
defeating Chantilly 81-77 in overtime and positioning
ourselves for a big game on Friday night against Oakton.
Quantrell Simmons had 18 points and 10 rebounds, while
David Park chipped in 17 points. Babu Ghuman had 13 points
and 8 boards, and Malachi Jackson had 8 points and 10
rebounds.
Offensive Player of the Game goes to Quantrell; Defensive
Player of the Game Honors go to Mitchell Dudley and
Malachi Jackson, and game balls were awarded to Shemar
Woods and Chris Neale.
February 5: After a very slow start at Wakefield,
we found ourselves down 22-5 at the end of the first
quarter. The Wildcats came storming back however,
outscoring defending regional chap Wakefield 72-56 the
rest of the way in a hard fought 78-77 defeat. Quantrell
Simmons led the way for CVHS with a career high 23 points
to go with 10 boards. Ryan Farrar also had a career high
with 13 points, and Tim Weyant chipped in 12. Three
Wildcats scored 9 each--David Ferrer (career high),
Mitchell Dudley, and David Park.
The effort was a good springboard into a big week as we
face Chantilly on Tuesday and Oakton on Friday, as we
fight for a good seed in the Concorde District tournament.

Grevey with Centreville captains Chris Neale and Tim
Weyant. Grevey spoke to the Wildcats at a recent pregame
meal at the Outback Steakhouse. Grevey is now a scout for
the Los Angeles Lakers.
January 26: After a disappointing effort against
Westfield on Tuesday night, we travel to Herndon on Friday
night. Herndon is currently ranked 4th in the latest poll
in the Washington Post. Playing teams of this stature is
tremendous experience. We plan to compete better than we
did on Tuesday night. Go wildcats!
January 21: We had a big win last night against
Robinson 59-56, which allowed us to move into 5th place in
the district. David Park led the way with 22 points, and
Ryan Farrar chipped in with a career high of 12. Babu
Ghuman, Ryan Farrar and Quantrell Simmons all grabbed 6
boards.
Offensive Player of the Game: David Park
Defensive Players of the Game: Mitchell Dudley, David
Ferrer
Game Ball: Ryan Farrar
We now travel to Westfield on Tuesday night.
January 20: We are looking forward to tonight's
game against Robinson. We will once again have a pregame
meal at the OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE of Clifton. Special thank
you to proprietor, Ashton Hhildreth for his generosity!
Tonight's guest speaker is Centreville Principal, Peter
Noonan.
We had a great team meal last Friday, including guest
speaker, Kevin Grevey. Mr. Grevey is a former Kentucky
All-American, member of the World Champion 1978 Washington
Bullets, and a current scout for the Los Angeles Lakers.
January 11: After a hard fought loss to Fairfax on
Friday, we are off until Friday when we tip off here
against Chantilly. Please come out to support the
Wildcats.
Following our Chantilly game, we travel to Oakton on
Tuesday and then host Robinson on Friday night, January
20. January 20 will be our SYA Night, when we welcome all
SYA basketball players to support the Wildcats!
December 31: We came up a little short last night
in the championship game of the Mt. Vernon tournament,
losing to host Mt. Vernon 66-49. Congratulations to David
Park and Quantrell Simmons for being named to the
all-tournament team. We now prepare for Herndon at
Centreville on Tuesday. Happy New Years!
December 30: The Wildcats led from start to finish
last night in defeating McKinley 89-52 to advance to
tonight's championship game of the Mt. Vernon Holiday
Tournament. The Wildcats will face the host Mt. Vernon
Majors tonight at 8:45 pm. David Park hit six three
pointers in the first half en route to 19 points, and
Malachi Jackson also scored 19 to go with 10 rebounds.
Quantrell Simmons scored 10 points and grabbed a career
high 20 rebounds, and Tim Weyant dished out 13 assists.
December 29: After a tough 54-51 loss at
Stonebridge before the holidays, we bounced back with an
82-77 victory over Osbourn Park in the first round of the
Mt. Vernon Holiday tournament. David Park had a career
high 26 points, followed by Quantrell Simmons with 14, Tim
Weyant with 13, and Chris Neale with 12. Q also grabbed 14
rebounds. We now advance to the second round game against
McKinley at 7 pm on Thursday evening at Mt. Vernon.
December 19: We fought hard on Friday night vs.
Westfield, eventually losing 66-55. I thought from an
effort standpoint, this was our best outing of the year.
We now need to expect that type of effort every time out!
Kudos to Malachi Jackson who blocked 11 shots Friday
night, and to Quantrell Simmons with 13 rebounds. We have
played some tough competiton so far. The combined record
of our opponents is something like 26-5. This should help
us later in the season.
We'll keep working. Go Wildcats!
December 16: As we are preparing to play Westfield
tonight, I am also spending some time following college
basketball. I am a member of the voting panel for the Hugh
Durham Award, which goes to the mid-major college coach of
the year. During the first week of January, we will be
honoring the mid-season Hugh Durham Award winner. Go to
www.HughDurhamAward.com
for more info. Go Wildcats!
December 15: We had a rough outing on Tuesday night
against a good Madison squad. We continue to work hard in
practice and look forward to our next three games before
the holidays. We play Westfield on Friday night at CVHS.
They are regional contenders, like Madison, and are coming
off big wins vs. Hayfield and South Lakes. On next
Tuesday, we travel to Robinson, and we close out out
pre-holiday schedule next Thursday at Stonebridge. Go
wildcats!
December 13: Thanks to all who contributed to our
Coaches vs. Cancer effort last Tuesday night. In our first
effort here at C'ville, we raised over $1,000. This was a
good start to a great cause. We will continue to look for
opportunities to support the American Cancer Society.
Unfortunately, the game did not go as well, and we plan to
bounce back this week as we play two regional contenders,
Madison and Westfield.
December 10: Our Coaches vs. Cancer game raised
over $1,000 on Tuesday night. A big thank you to all who
contributed. We hope to make this event bigger and better
next year!
We have a big week coming up next week, with games against
regional contenders Madison on Tuesday and Westfield on
Friday. Both games are at CVHS, so come out and support
the Wildcats!
December 5: In our first road game on Friday night,
we played well enough to win for two and a half quarters
and then struggled a bit after that. We have regrouped and
are ready to face Marshall on Tuesday, weather permitting.
Our game vs. Marshall is designated as our Coaches vs.
Cancer game. We hope to make a generous donation to the
American Cancer Society after the game.
December 1: Congratulations to all three teams for
strong opening night efforts last night against Washington
& Lee.
On the varsity level, a back and forth battle went the way
of the Wildcats 71-69. Babu Ghuman hit two key free throws
to seal the win. Tim Weyant 16 points and 5 assists and
Malachi Jackson scored 14 points and grabbed 7 boards to
lead Centreville. David Park chipped in with 11and

Game honors go to Malachi Jackson, while Defensive Player
of the Game goes to Tim Weyant. Everyone stepped up
defensively in holding Josh McDaniel to 3 points in the
2nd half after he torched us for 24 in the first half.
Ryan Farrar earned a game ball for is efforts off the
bench.
We travel to West Potomac for a non-district matchup
Friday night.
Our upcoming game on Tuesday, December 6 will be our
"Coaches vs. Cancer" Game. Coach Weeren and I have been
doing this for five years, and our communities have raised
over $17,000 for the American Cancer Society. Please
support the American Cancer Society by making a generous
donation. You can make a donation at the game on Tuesday,
give it to any Centreville basketball coach, and I will
forward it to the American Cancer Society. Thanks, and Go
Wildcats!
November 23: We had our first scrimmage last night
at Potomac Falls. I think at all three levels, we did some
good and and some bad. We got a taste of what we can
become and also a feel for how far we have to go. We now
have one week to prepare for our season opener on
Wednesday, November 30 at home vs. the Washington & Lee
Generals.
Everyone have a great Thanksgiving.
October 21: We are anxiously looking forward to the
start of practice on November 14. We are continuing with
weight training, open gym, and conditioning Monday thru
Thursday. We will have a player meeting on Thursday,
November 10 at 2:30 in the Lecture Hall to review all
pertinent information for tryouts.
All prospective players must complete a Virginia High
School League physical prior to tryouts.
Physical forms are available on the Centreville HS web
site:
www.fcps.edu/CentrevilleHS
September 20: We are gearing up for the start of
our season! Tryouts begin on November 14, and we have
already started with weight training, conditioning, and
open gym. We can’t wait for November! Congrats to our
football team for a great start. Hopefully we can put as
many points on the board as they are!
August 29: The Centreville Wildcats worked hard
this summer, participating in two varsity summer leagues,
a JV summer league, and team camp, in addition to running
a week of basketball camp. We are anxiously looking
forward to preparing for the 2005-06 season and we ask for
the support of all Wildcat fans!
